Projet de Recherche “Jardins partagés dans le Système Alimentaire Territorial rennais” (JardiSAT). Rapport Final

Abstract : A renewed interest is nowadays occurring in integrating agricultural and food issues into city planning. Rethinking the place of agriculture in intra and periurban spaces reveals all the complexity of spatial and functional relationships in terms of competition for the use of resources (e.g. land and water) and the cognitive, relational and organizational proximities to be re-built. The JardiSAT (“Community Gardens in the Rennes Territorial Food System”) project aims to highlight how community gardens, as a unique and avant-garde form of urban agriculture (UA) (Nahmías and Le Caro, 2012), contribute to the construction of a sustainable territorial food system at the city level. The city of Rennes was chosen as a case study. The agglomeration of Rennes, located in the heart of a powerful agricultural production basin, is also the place of emergence of interesting approaches to UA carried out by citizens, individually as well as collectively. A study of their contribution to urban metabolism and to the local agro-food system was conducted to show the profits and impacts of these emerging agricultural forms at the city level. The report complements the publications by providing detailed information on the research framework and methodology of the JardiSAT project, on the relationship between agriculture and urban metabolism, on the dynamics of community gardens in Rennes, and by providing significant results on the city dwellers contribution to the sustainable development of Rennes’ territorial food system, on a first quantitative approach to the agri-food contribution of community gardens and on the collective building of UA in Rennes.
