Abstract : In the first four books of his Nuova Cronica, Giovanni Villani sets our different patterns of cities' founding, using illustrious cases : Troy, Rome, the towns of Tuscany, and of course his homeland, Florence. Internal dynamics of a writing bearing on manifold resources are analysed here and linked with the decorative options of the sole illuminated manuscript of his Cronica.
