The mobilisation of data within the ritual interpretation of San rock arts from Maloti-Drakensberg

The rock art sites attributed to the San hunter-gatherers of South Africa are among the richest and best documented in the world. Certain regions, such as the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, have been extensively researched and recorded, and a wide range of ethnographic data has been collected, particularly concerning the making and the significance of the paintings. However, using these accounts to interpret the images and the rock art sites raises major heuristic and epistemological questions, as certain San groups - despite having provided a wealth of cosmogonic, mythological and traditional information - never practised this type of art. Over the decades, many researchers have put forward disparate hypotheses and theories, most of which are nomothetic and emphasise the importance of ritual practices. Yet the criteria for attributing a ritual character to these images have never been explicitly formulated. This paper therefore proposes a synoptic discussion of ritualist approaches to the study of rock art attributed to the San of Maloti-Drakensberg. The relationships between the ethnographic accounts collected, the ritual practices documented and those supposedly represented or evoked in the rock art are examined in the light of the questions central to the discipline, such as iconographic identification, the diversity of themes and styles, the function of the images, the motivation and the identity of the artists.
Les sites d’art rupestre attribués aux chasseurs-collecteurs San d’Afrique du Sud figurent parmi les plus riches et les mieux documentés au monde. Certaines régions telles que le parc uKhahlamba-Drakensberg ont fait l'objet de recherches et de recensements approfondis, et des données ethnographiques diverses ont été recueillies, notamment en ce qui concerne la réalisation et la signification des peintures. L’utilisation de ces témoignages pour interpréter les images et les sites rupestres soulève toutefois d’importantes questions heuristiques et épistémologiques, car certains groupes San – bien qu’ayant livré une profusion d’informations cosmogoniques, mythologiques et traditionnelles – n’ont jamais pratiqué ce type d’art. Au fil des décennies, de nombreux chercheurs ont émis des hypothèses et des théories disparates, dont la plupart sont nomothétiques et mettent l’accent sur l’importance des pratiques rituelles. Pourtant, les critères qui permettraient éventuellement d’attribuer un caractère rituel à ces images ne sont jamais formulés explicitement. Ce travail propose donc une discussion synoptique des approches ritualistes concernant l’étude des arts rupestres attribués aux San du Maloti-Drakensberg. Les relations entre les récits ethnographiques recueillis, les pratiques rituelles documentées et celles supposées être représentées ou évoquées dans les arts rupestres sont examinées à l’aune des questions centrales de la discipline, telles que l’identification iconographique, la diversité des thèmes et des styles, la fonction des images, la motivation et l’identité des artistes.
