Authors vs. readers : a study of the criteria of composition and textual adaptation in bio-historical collections of Modern Central Asia (16th-18th c.)
Résumé
This paper is concerned with Persian taẕkera writing tradition in post-Timurid Central Asia, especially in connection with Bukhara and Samarkand literary milieu. Based mostly on the examples of Khwāja Neythāri (16th c.), ‘Abdallāh Kaboli (16th/17th c.), Moṭrebi Samarqandi (16/17th c.), and Maliḥā Samarqandi’s (17th c.) works, it will examine main creative stages of compiling such works, and propose an analysis of their structural characteristics. It will also consider selection criteria for inclusion in their biographical collections adopted by the post-Timurid authors. Finally, it will discuss some aspects of the reception of these texts by their contemporary readers, especially the process of adapting their texts not only to suit the patron but also to suit literary criteria expected by readers in general.
