Numancia resucitada, los orígenes de Zamora en el siglo XIII
Résumé
The identification of Zamora with Numantia took place after the conquest of the former by king Alfonso III in the 9th century. The legend about the mythical origins of the city of the Douro was recovered by the Franciscan Juan Gil at the end of the 13th century. According to the friar, the heroic value of the inhabitants of Zamora, projected towards the past history of umantia, was a rhetorical strategy intended to reinforce the construction of a current identity. According to the author, the old model worked well, only because it denied the passage of time, and its capacity to adapt when confronting new circumstances was well suited to the needs of affirmation of an emerging proto-“nationalism”.
La identificación de Zamora con Numancia se produjo a raíz de la conquista de la primera por Alfonso III en el siglo IX. La leyenda sobre los orígenes míticos de la urbe duriense siguió su cauce hasta que fue de nuevo recuperada por el franciscano Juan Gil a finales del siglo XIII. Para el fraile menor, el valor heroico de los zamoranos, proyectado hacia el pasado numantino, era una estrategia retórica destinada a reforzar la construcción de la identidad del presente. Para el autor, el viejo modelo resultaba operativo porque negaba el transcurso del tiempo, y porque su capacidad de volverse a actualizar ante nuevas circunstancias se ajustaba perfectamente a las necesidades de afirmación de un proto-“nacionalismo” emer-gente.
