Passports given by the Spanish administration to bishops crossing to India include the members of the episcopal "family", a set of intimate companions and collaborators who form the immediate surroundings of the bishop. This allows a study of this influential though difficult to grasp informal group.
Our study of a dozen cases shows the importance of the same as a protective social environment for the bishop, aislated as he is in his diocese, within foreign if not hostile surroundings.
A study of previous relationships between the bishop and the members of his family insists on the weight of non family relationships, as well as on the inteweaving of the same with family links, to explain the choice of these companions. It also enhances the weight of relational factors in the selection of colonial bishops in front of more usually stressed factors, such as their place of birth.
