By completely destroying the city of Paradise (27,000 inhabitants) and its surroundings, the deadliest fire in the history of the United States caused a major shock both for individuals and for socio-political institutions, opening then the possibility for voices kept out of the way to be heard regarding the redefinition of the relationship with the forest. But is this critic of the modern relation to the forest really the expression of a paradigmatic change? In the first part, I briefly review the history of forest management in the United States in order to show how it was first and foremost considered as an exploitable resource. In a second part, I show how the fire on one hand disturbed the institutions and the individuals, while on the other hand it was perceived by others as an opportunity, that of bringing the forest out of the utilitarian relationship. In the last part, I focus on the limits of those initiatives and describe how each of them reproduces the modern ontological relationship between humans and the forest, the one in which the latter is kept at a distance from humans.

En détruisant entièrement le ville de Paradise (27 000 habitant.e.s) et ses environs, l'incendie le plus meurtrier de l'histoire des États-Unis a provoqué un choc important tant pour les individus que pour les institutions socio-politiques, laissant alors la possibilité à des voix tenues jusque-là à l'écart de se faire entendre quant à la redéfinition du rapport à l'environnement forestier. Mais cette remise en question est-elle réellement l'expression d'un changement paradigmatique ? Dans une première partie je fais brièvement l'histoire de la gestion des forêts aux États-Unis afin de montrer qu'elle a tout d'abord été considérée avant tout comme une ressource à exploiter. Dans une deuxième partie je raconte comment l'incendie a d'un côté troublé les institutions et les individus qui les occupent, quand de l'autre il est perçu par certain.e.s comme une opportunité, celle de faire sortir la forêt de cette relation utilitariste. Dans la dernière partie je m'intéresse aux limites des initiatives et décris comment chacune d'entre elles reproduit le rapport ontologique moderne entre les humains et la forêt dans lequel cette dernière est tenue à distance des humains.
