A Persian founding and endowment document for a madrasa in Khiva by Fâdil Bey Qunghrât (1214/1799-1800), recently discovered in the Regional Museum of Nukus, sheds light on the patronage activities of the dynasty at a time when they strived to legitimize their power in Khiva. Based on local written sources and archives, and on the only historical map in which the madrasa appears, the present article identifies the donor, Fâdil Bey, and locates the building in the city of Khiva while demonstrating that the madrasa was still in activity in 1328/1910. The second part of the paper presents and comments information on the educational personnel and curriculum gathered from the waqf-nâma, based in particular on the analysis of a list of textbooks recommended for the students to read.
