Culture laïque, affirmation identitaire et dévotion : les réécritures en français des Vies des saints gallo-romains et mérovingiens du domaine royal (XIIIe-XVe siècle)

Abstract : In the Late Middle Ages a vast movement of rewriting older texts in vernacular languages took place, including hagiographical works previously written in Latin. Our focus will be placed on written works from the XIIIth and XVth century, specifically French adaptations of the Latin Vitae of Gallo-roman and Merovingian Saints who played an important role in the French royal domain’s past. We will try to identify the specific contexts of these adaptations, and their target audiences. The translation of certain spiritual works into a language other than Latin, and in particular "vulgar" languages, long considered as those of the people (as opposed to the Latin of the clergy), demonstrates an effort to share the Saints’ stories to the masses. For this new audience of hagiographical literature, the use of French can be considered a necessity, or simply a preference. Despite their explicit religious aims, these translations serve profane purposes too. The question of identity, particularly, is essential to this study : Royal identity, as many of the writings do not hesitate promoting the Royal institution, precisely during troubling times, in the context of the Hundred Years’ War and the complicated Valois’ rise to power ; local identity, too, whether it is by promoting a cult or a shrine, a diocese, or more broadly, by celebrating a local Church undermined by the pontifical authority. Therefore, the French versions of hagiographical works in this corpus allow to establish a collective identity, and concurrently they answer to the concern of personalization of the late Middle Ages believers.
