Romain Gary's life (1914-1980): work and engagement. A quest and a certain expression of the European identity

Premier travail universitaire d’envergure consacré à Romain Gary, cette thèse de doctorat poursuit deux objectifs. D’une part, contribuer à la connaissance de l’histoire des intellectuels en France en apportant un certain nombre d’éléments nouveaux sur un personnage, de second plan certes, mais présentant des caractéristiques intéressantes du fait de son multipositionnement en tant que combattant de la France Libre, écrivain et diplomate. D’autre part, il s’agit de se pencher à cette occasion sur la question de l’identité Européenne, thématique centrale dans son existence comme dans son œuvre littéraire. Ce travail de recherche s’appuie pour cela le postulat suivant : la possibilité d’aborder ce qui apparait comme difficilement saisissable –en l’occurrence l’existence d’une identité commune aux Européens– en prenant pour objet d’étude à un exemple concret, inévitablement restreint et limité par définition, mais qui, de par ses spécificités, fournit une bonne illustration de ce la manière dont une telle identité peut se manifester. La rédaction de cette thèse a permis plusieurs avancées sur les sujets traités. Tout d’abord une meilleure connaissance du personnage de Romain Gary, notamment grâce à l’apport d’éclairages nouveaux et d’éléments biographiques jusqu’ici inconnus. Sont ainsi expliquées les raisons de son isolement dans le champ intellectuel français, ainsi que celles qui ont contribué aux malentendus attachés à son image. Par ailleurs, l’analyse de l’expression d’une identité européenne présente dans son œuvre (mise en scène de lieux de la mémoire collective européenne, utilisation de figures symboliques et mythiques tirées du patrimoine culturel commun) fait ressortir le rôle de la littérature en général - et du roman en particulier - dans l’expression de l’identité culturelle commune de l’Europe. Si la matérialisation de l’identité européenne relève avant tout du domaine artistique, pour ce qui est de son ancrage au niveau du vécu individuel, ce phénomène semble en revanche être limité à des personnes présentant des itinéraires hors du commun, comme dans le cas de Romain Gary.

The major academic work on Romain Gary, this doctoral thesis has two objectives. On the one hand, to contribute to the knowledge of the history of intellectuals in France by bringing new elements on a figure of the field, of secondary importance certainly, but presenting interesting characteristics because of its multipositioning as a combatant of Free France, as a writer and diplomat. On the other hand, it allows to analyses the issue of the European identity, a key topic in his biography as well as in his literary work. This research work is based on the following postulate: the possibility of addressing what appears to be difficult to grasp - in this case the existence of an identity common to individuals living on the same continent - by taking as an object of study an concrete example, inevitably particular and limited by definition, but which, because of its characteristics provides a good illustration of how such an identity can manifest itself. This thesis has allowed several advances on the addressed topics. First of all a better knowledge of the personnage of Romain Gary, thanks to first-hand information and biographical elements hitherto unknown. The explanation for his isolation in the French intellectual field, as well as the reasons which contributed to the misunderstandings attached to his image, are thus explained. Moreover, the analysis of the expression of a European identity present in his work (staging places of European collective memory, use of symbolic and mythical figures drawn from the common cultural heritage) highlights the role of literature in general - and the novel in particular - in the expression of the common cultural identity of Europe. Although the materialization of European identity above all takes place in the artistic domain, in terms of its anchoring at the level of individual experience, this phenomenon seems to be limited to people with unusual life itineraries, as in the case of Romain Gary.
