La Représentation des routes sur les cartes anciennes

Abstract : This contribution proposes to read the evolution of the representation of the road network on the different maps of France that were elaborated to serve as a cartographic reference for the French territory from the 18th century onwards (COSTA AND ROBERT 2008). A series of eleven cartographic moments, understood as a renegotiation of the dialogue between the terrain and the figurations, will be analysed. These eleven major stages marked out a tour of France by our topographers-mapographers, and form the key dates in the cartographic production of the world. These different collections are now kept at the IGN's Cartothèque and some have been digitised and georeferenced to be included in the Géoportail 1. Legends have only been considered necessary for reading maps for two or three centuries. Therefore, retrospective reading sometimes requires their reconstitution. This is why we will rely on both the legends published on the maps by the cartographers themselves and on legends made a posteriori from direct observation of the maps. Translated with (free version)
