Le regard de deux pèlerins allemands sur la Méditerranée et ses marins

During the 14th and 15th centuries, many German pilgrims set out on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. To this end, they had to travel through a maritim space unfamiliar to them and thus to discover landscapes, men and customs which may surprise them, but also interest or amuse them. Some pilgrims left long and vivid descriptions of that space, such as Ludolf of Sudheim, who wrote original chapters about Mediterranean fishes or birds, and Felix Fabri, author of a complete treatise about the sea and the life on board. Using these two pilgrimage accounts, I will try to show how these men from Northern Europe conceived of this meridional sea.
