Histoire, cultures et représentations d'une matière-déchet : les mâchefers du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours

Abstract : A single term says in France solid residues from combustion produced by industry as well those from the incineration of domestic refuses: mâchefer (clincker, bottom ashes). However, both only have in common to have undergone the treatment of fire before becoming ultimate wastes. Indeed, their properties and their uses have deeply differed since the 18th century. The former virtually disappeared at the end of the 20th century. Conversely, the latter have accumulated since. They are the ones that the industrialists wish today to turn into raw materials. However, their use comes up against the reluctance of public. Here we examine the perception that people have throughout industrialization and up to the present day of these clinkers, considering that this is partly the basis for their rejection and their relegation among sinful materials. To this end, this article explores the variety of representations about mâchefer through the way it appears among ordinary cultures and more generally cultural production.
