Abstract : Urban heat islands (UHIs) reflect the local impact of human activities on temperatures. Several methods can be used to study UHIs, including air temperature measurements (fixed and mobile), surface temperature estimates (satellite images by remote sensing) and physical or geostatistical modelling. The objective of this study is to analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of surface and air temperatures in the urban agglomeration of Rennes (Brittany, France) during the summer period in 2016. Surface temperatures derived from thermal imagery from the Landsat 8 satellite were compared to observations of nighttime air temperature measurements obtained from mobile transects. Statistical analyzes of the linear correlation coefficient (r) were used for the thermal data set. The results of this study show the importance of combining different methods to characterize the UHIs.
