Un doctrinaire « homme du peuple » ? Eugène Janvier, sous-préfet de Dinan en 1847-1848

Abstract : Can one be both a rich young man, appointed sub-prefect of Dinan at the age of 22 thanks to his father’s relations and a “man of the people” worshipped by a workers’ population? The case of Eugène Janvier, in 1847-1848, seems to prove it since a petition collecting the signature of 10% of the inhabitants of this city claimed and obtained the confirmation in his function of this July monarchy’s official under the Second Republic. This article seeks to understand the reasons for this paradoxical popularity, between ideology, clientelism and real proximity.
