Abstract : During the final phase of the Bronze Age (Bronze Final IIIb/Ha B2-3), pottery from France and Catalonia bears geometric, anthropomorphic or zoomorphic symbols. Both the semiological system used, and its organisation, seem to have been widely understood from the outset. Nonetheless, precursors of the signs appear at an earlier stage of the Late Bronze Age on vessels of RSFO style (Rhine - Switzerland - eastern France). They seem to disappear rapidly at the end of the Late Bronze Age, or at the very latest early in Hallstatt C. What followed is uncertain. The evolution of this system is considered, and the identification of certain animal signs is discussed. These are then situated within the longue durée of protohistoric symbolism.
