Résumé

Students’ experiences in higher education (HE) have been largely transformed by the massification process, which sustained the diversification of the student body characteristics, and, as a result, the reasons to study and the meaning allocated to studying in HE. The concept of students’ social experience aims less at describing precisely individuals’ lived experience of higher education than to grasp its plurality through the production of a classification or typology. Indeed, over the last half century, higher education systems’ massification process has profoundly changed the student experience. Although massification is not always equitable and democratic, it has led to diversifying and segmenting the students’ world.
