Farmed space in the community : a cross-channel comparison of two rural areas concerned by urbanization, Mid Devon (UK) and Coglais (Bzh)

Abstract : Analysing results of 5 focus groups conducted in Coglais (Brittany, France) and of 15 interviews conducted in the Creedy-Taw area (Mid-Devon, UK) between may and july 2009, we focus on the changing place of the farmed countryside (fields, grass, barns, pathes, dwellings and natural places included in farming systems) in rural communities. In the two rural areas choosed for this cross-channel comparison, people formerly felt relatively remote from town but are for some 10 years in a closer relationship with their main cities (respectively Rennes and Exeter), because of urban sprawl, improvement of infrastructures and manifestations of new urban needs (recreation, water & energy supply, etc.). The qualitative methodologies should allow us to understand how the farmers adapt their farms to this changes, but also to underline the place that farming could find in this new context for non-farmers inhabitants and for planners. In the two countries, despite their enormous differences, the planning systems tend to protect farmed space. But our survey shows that what is an historically based princeps in Britain is more the product of social relationships in France. In Coglais, farmers lost more acres, but their social importance increase with the sprawl of dwellings. In Devon, the acreage remains, but farms and farming seem to be more and more disconnected from the rural communities. In the two areas, nevertheless, post-productivist farms enable both to spare space by a better valorisation and to culturaly reconnect agriculture to the general and now urbanised local community.
