Le genre : une « catégorie utile » de l'histoire juive allemande (1867-1933)
Résumé
Gender: a “Useful Category” of German-Jewish History (1867-1933).
Gender” as an analytical tool is a traveling concept between disciplines and cultural areas. For thirty years, the concept has been used to write German-Jewish history. Looking back at this historiography that crosses the history of the German-speaking world and Jewish studies, this article shows that “gender” has shed new light on major issues in the history of Jews in the German-speaking world between 1867 and 1933, particularly the dynamics of assimilation/dissimilation, and the entry into the modern bourgeoisie. “Gender” also emphasizes the “agency” of Jewish women and men who, in their daily negotiation of a German belonging, also remained distinctly Jewish. Nowadays, “gendering” German-Jewish history not only includes the history of Jewish women, but also the history of gender relations and the history of German-Jewish masculinities.
