Ironie et nostalgie chez José Rodrigues Miguéis : le cas de « Saudades para a Dona Genciana »

Abstract : In 1956, the exiled Portuguese writer José Rodrigues Miguéis published what is now sometimes considered as his masterpiece – the short story “Saudades para a Dona Genciana”. We believe that the originality of this story lies in its irony: although it may seem to be looking back nostalgically, it is also an indirect critique of Portuguese society, both in the early 20th century and during the Salazar regime. By declaring his nostalgic and paradoxical love of Portugal, the writer can escape censorship and, most importantly, be sincere, expressing his support for Portugal and the distance he harbored towards that country.
