Archéozoologie des collections anciennes : le cas de la faune du Magdalénien supérieur d’Isturitz

Abstract : The study of the faunal remains from the Upper Magdalenian layer at Isturitz was undertaken as a complementary part of an experimental program concerning upper Magdalenian hunting weapons. An inspection of the faunal assemblage (MAN, Passemard and Saint-Périer collections, layers F1 and I) showed important lacks: the material was much less abundant than reported in the original literature. However, the historiographic reconstruction of the excavation allowed us a more accurate interpretation of certain statements in the excavators’ publications: we were able to evaluate and partly adjust the distortions due to the dated excavation techniques and/or the collections’ hazardous fate. A preliminary archeozoological study, taking these restrictions into account, throws a new light on the exploitation of animal resources at Isturitz during the Upper Magdalenian.
