Chateaubriand et la Russie

Abstract : The article is mainly based on a reading of the Mémoires d'outre-tombe and some other works by Chateaubriand (Le Congrès de Vérone, De Buonaparte et des Bourbons) to sketch a study of the writer's relations with Russia. It shows that the question of exile in Russia has arisen at least four times in the career of Chateaubriand without ever, in the end, he has stayed in this country. On the other hand, his political engagements and his diplomatic career led him to enter into relations with Russian diplomats and statesmen, including Tsar Alexander Iᵉʳ. The political role of Russia in the first decades of the nineteenth century and the relations between this country and France hence occupy a significant place in his work, which contrasts with the very small presence of Russian literature.
