Du tableau esthétique au récit de bataille : un exemple sanskrit de transposition de genre du Kumārasaṃbhava au Skandapurāṇa

Abstract : The aim of the present paper is to explore the ways in which chapter 163 of the Skandapurāṇa borrows and adapts about ten verses from the second canto of Kālidāsa’s Kumārasaṃbhava. First, it is shown that the passages examined are not accidental parallels (identified for the first time in this paper), but must be due to some form of borrowing. Although the direction of borrowing cannot be established with certainty, Kālidāsa’s poem is probably the source. A detailed textual and narratological analysis throws some light on the methods and strategies of adaptation. From this analysis, it is concluded that the purāṇa does not merely simplify the sophisticated verses for a less learned audience, but consciously adapts the poetic images to suit its own purposes, which are both literary and religious.
