Seeing the Sights of San Francisco with Kay Boyle
Résumé
At first a reluctant resident of San Francisco where she came to live in 1962, the American writer and poet Kay Boyle (also known for her previous involvement with the Late Modernist “Revolution of the Word” in Paris, in the late twenties and early thirties) was soon to adopt the City by the Bay as yet another major locus of what she termed her “humourless search for the true meaning of democracy.” Her vibrant essays invite the reader to an ironical guided visit of the city highlights, which design a new grammar and cartography of dissent, thus questioning the very concept of “urbanity.”
