Why do the Tuaregs veil their faces ?

Male veiling is of central importance to the Tuareg, who define themselves as 'those who wear the veil'. They attribute two contradictory origins to the custom. This paper aims to explain this contradiction, and to explain Tuareg women, on the contrary, are not bound to veil their faces.
