Communalism is a major feature of the society in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It originates from the organization of the Ottoman society into millets (religious communities), and has been institutionalized during the Austro-Hungarian and the Communist periods. In the early 1990s, nationalist parties have used this communalist organization of the Bosnian society to win the elections and to start with the dismantlement of the state .

Le communautarisme est un trait essentiel de la société en Bosnie-Herzégovine. Issu de l'organisation en millets (communautés religieuses) de la société ottomane, il a été institutionnalisé pendant la période austro-hongroise et la période communiste. Au début des années 1990, les partis nationalistes se sont appuyés sur cette organisation communautariste de la société bosnienne pour remporter les élections et entamer le démantèlement de l'Etat.
