The ancient Castilian nobility, created mostly in the XVIth century, is suffering a sharp demographic decline at the end of the XVIIIth century. This does not mean a weakening of the paper of nobility, but a change in the concept itself. A new nobility in fact is rising at the same time, a national one, selected from then on by the king and no longer by the local societies.
