Trésors ou dépôts monétaires ? Quelques réflexions à partir de la situation en France

Abstract : The term "trésor" is usually used in French to refer to finds of several ancient coins. However, this word is neither a legal category nor a scientific approach to an archaeological and historical fact. The combined approach of a fine archaeology of monetary ensembles and an anthropology of monetary practices seems to us to justify the use of the concept of “dépôt monétaire” rather than “trésor”. Several french examples illustrate the possibilities offered by this approach and form a plea for the recognition of archaeonumismatics as a discipline in its own right.
