"Politeness and Discourse Markers "

Linguistic politeness is a vast field of study that has developed in several areas of language science, from pragmatics to sociolinguistics. It deals with studying how speakers of a given language culture interact while avoiding conflicts and preserving each other's faces. In this face-work game, the linguistic formulations of speech acts have often been studied; however discourse markers also play a significant role in the construction of polite interaction by their multifunctional nature and their capacity to both structure the exchange and express subjective meaning. To explain how discourse markers participate in linguistic politeness, we will study them through the prism of some main characteristics of politeness developed in three approaches: theoretical approaches of the notions of conflict avoidance, positive and negative politeness and facework; approaches highlighting the perception of politeness by lay speakers; interactional approaches that place politeness in a broader framework of communication theory. Finally, we propose an original case study on the contribution to the politeness of two discourse markers in French usually seen as connectives, namely du coup and alors.
