Weathering of architectural surfaces produces complex materialities that not only capture the imprint of time but also suggest a broader framework of natural processes. By embracing material decay we engage with the immanent transformative forces of nature that disrupt notions of permanence and passivity of inorganic matter. The paper examines the cases of water stains, brickwork disintegration and cracked floors in order to certify their evoking potential. Decayed and fragmented things thus emerge as vibrant agents of intensities that link us with the environmental coordinates and origins of matter. These perceptible linkages contribute to the experiential density that can activate the presence of an atmosphere.
