In this third chapter, the theory of controlled autonomy is exposed in a shortened manner compared to that of 1993. This theory helps to understand an apparent contradiction between the simultaneous deepening of concentration and that of fragmentation: the continuous rise of the concentration of strategic power in the hands of a few and of the economic concentration on the one hand and the development of fragmentation induced by policies of externalization and decentralization by leading companies and the State, on the other hand. It is a critical theory that highlights a worrying evolution of capitalism based on new management strategies and governance that were implemented as soon as the early 80s and that have grown since. This theory is based on several important concepts such as strategic growth and strategic power during permanent crisis and that of cascading subcontracting.

Résumé: Dans ce troisième chapitre, la théorie de l'autonomie contrôlée (controlled autonomy) initialement publiée par l'auteur en 1993 est ici exposée d'une manière abrégée. Elle traite d'un processus apparemment contradictoire par lequel une concentration économique et une concentration du pouvoir s'appuient sur une fragmentation impulsée notamment par les politiques d'externalisation et de décentralisation, tant au niveau des plus grandes entreprises que de l'Etat. L'autonomie contrôlée est une théorie critique qui caractérise une évolution préoccupante du capitalisme contemporain fondée un nouveau mode de management et de gouvernance qui s'est développé avec force depuis le début des années 1980. Cette théorie s'appuie sur plusieurs concepts fondamentaux, notamment ceux d'expansion stratégique en période de crise et de pouvoir stratégique tous deux fondés sur des politiques de concentration et d'externalisation et plus particulièrement sur celui de sous-traitance en cascade (cascading subcontracting).
