LA READAPTACIÓN Y LA TRANSFORMACIÓN POLÍTICO CULTURAL NAZCA: LOS NAZCA DEL HORIZONTE MEDIO AL INTERMEDIO TARDÍO

The traditional interpretation of the disappearance of Nazca is understood to have taken place during the Middle Horizon, specifically through the expansion of the Hauri/Tiahuanaco Culture. Nevertheless, the material culture recovered from archaeological excavation and prospection gainsays this assumption. In effect, the Nazca area maintained its population during the Middle Horizon and Late Intermediate Period. Yet there was a gradual re-adaptation by Nazca to changing ideologies. The focus in this article is of the Middle Horizon as one of the great periods of regional interaction and not as a process of political or imperial expansion. Therefore the elements that conditioned Nazca transformations were of an endogenous and exogenous nature, with the former being the determinants of said changes. We believe that it was the necessity of political survival by the Nazca elites that pushed them to drag the rest of the population towards a politico-religious adaptation that was initially linked to the Huari/Tiahuanaco sphere and following this an association with Pachacamac.

La arqueología tradicional andina plantea de manera preconcebida una supuesta desaparición cultural Nazca, producto de los efectos del denominado Horizonte medio o de la llamada expansión cultural Huari/Tiahuanaco. Por el contrario la cultura material obtenida por diversas excavaciones y prospecciones, se exprime contra este supuesto. En efecto el territorio Nazca durante el Horizonte medio y el Intermedio tardío, mantuvo sus poblaciones de antaño, pero sumergidas dentro de otra esfera de pensamiento en la cual los Nazca se habrían readaptado progresivamente. El Horizonte medio es enfocado en este artículo como una época de grandes interacciones regionales y no como un proceso de expansión política o imperial. Así los elementos que condicionaron tales transformaciones Nazca son de índole endógeno y exógeno, siendo las primeras las determinantes de dichos cambios. Planteamos que fueron las necesidades de supervivencia política de las elites Nazca las que arrastraron a sus poblaciones a una adaptación político religiosa primeramente ligada a la esfera Huari/Tiahuanaco y posteriormente asociada a la órbita de Pachacamac.
