Mahbär et sänbäte : associations religieuses en Éthiopie

Faithful of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwahedo Church gather sometimes into a religious association. We can distinguish two types of religious associations: the mahbär and the sänbäte. These two types are organized on the same scheme and are led by the faithful themselves. Both are based on a fundamental concept, which is to gather faithful around a banquet for a commemoration. Mahbär and sänbäte are a representation of a zeker, a crucial concept in the Ethiopian Christianity. The religious authority is shared by one priest who leads the liturgy of the ritual. The presence of a priest without an organizational role highlights the influence of the laymen to organize their own religious life outwards the cast-iron ecclesiastical organisation. The social and religious influence of these organizations is very important in towns and in the countryside. To be member of these associations is a sign of an important social status in the parish community and the reality of both mahbär and sänbäte shows the existence of a way of dialogue between the Church and the faithful.

Les fidèles de l'Eglise orthodoxe täwahedo d'Ethiopie se réunissent parfois en associations religieuses. Nous pouvons distinguer deux types d'associations religieuses : les mahbär et les sänbäte. Ces deux types d'association sont organisés selon le même schéma et sont dirigés par les fidèles eux-mêmes. Tous deux sont basés sur un même concept : réunir les fidèles autour d'un banquet commémoratif. En effet, les mahbär et les sänbäte sont la caractérisation d'un zeker, principe fondamental dans le christianisme éthiopien. Un prêtre est chargé de dirigé la liturgie du rituel. Toutefois, le fait que ce dernier n'ait aucun rôle dans l'organisation interne de l'association met en avant la volonté des fidèles à pouvoir organiser leur dévotion en-dehors de tous cadre ecclésiastiques plus rigides. L'influence sociale et religieuse de ces association est très importante tant dans les villes que dans les campagnes et être membre de ces associations reste un signe d'un statut social important au sein de la communauté paroissiale. Par ailleurs, l'étude de ces associations nous montre l'importance d'une passerelle entre le monde profane des laïcs et le monde sacré des prêtres.
