As images of feminine hospitality, Martha and Mary are regularly interrogated since the notion of hospitality constitutes a theme of the Gospels that is ceaselessly revisited. Mary-Magdalene was set apart by the spontaneous and generously offered hospitality that allowed her to receive Salvation. Martha, for her part, also carried out the function of hospitality all the while staying secondary. It is therefore another side of Martha that would stand out and becomes popular at the end of the 12th century. One of these women was evangelical and the other legendary, corresponding to two living spaces, two distinct existences, but also to differentiated attributes and iconography. To study the ties each of the two sisters maintained with the notion of hospitality therefore indicates determining the reasons and the significations of the flagrant preference for Mary. It consists of understanding this apparent separation between scenes in the Gospels and religious practices, taking into account alternate readings presented by medievalists, modernists and contemporary historians, within the framework of the historical sciences.

Marthe et sa sœur Marie sont deux personnages des Évangiles, deux femmes proches de Jésus dont les cultes ont connu des destins bien différents au cours des siècles. Marie, devenue Marie-Madeleine, est une figure majeure de la dévotion chrétienne, un mythe, qui a fait l'objet de très nombreuses études tandis que Marthe est quasi méconnue. L'exégèse comme l'iconographie hésitent pour insister tour à tour sur ce qui les sépare ou au contraire leur complémentarité. Marthe est l'hôtesse du Christ besogneuse et appliquée dans ses tâches domestiques et matérielles, l'image de la vie active, tandis que Marie-Madeleine est celle qui écoute et reçoit le message du Christ dans une attitude de contemplation. Les deux sœurs sont toutes deux associées à l'hospitalité et à l'accueil des nécessiteux.
