Les formules d'allocution nominales dans les Tragédies de Sénèque
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to characterize the morphosyntactic and pragmatic properties of noun phrases of address in Seneca's tragic discourse. After a short introduction on the part played by these vocative formula in dramatic enunciation, we will proceed to a more formal analysis. From the morphological viewpoint the different markers of the sequences will be examined : the use of the Latin vocative vs. Nominative, the particle o. The syntactic analysis will first be limited to the internal structure of the formula. In regard to various ambiguous examples emphasis will be put on distinction between addresses, praedicativa, attributives and appositions. It will further be investigated in which cases the personal pronoun tu proves to be a functional nominative or vocative. From a macrosyntactic viewpoint, the paper ends with an examination of the relation between the vocative noun phrase and the rest of the utterance. As there is a particularly close relationship between vocatives and imperatives, all kinds of speech acts are not equally represented in the host-clause.
