A prototype-based approach of the concept of lexical blending is to be adopted if one wants to accomodate the many conflicting definitions encountered in the literature. The four conceptual features [DOUBLE CLIPPING], [INTERNAL CLIPPING], [OVERLAPPING] and [COORDINATION] were extracted from the different definitions, and requalified as typical features of the concept. A set of English blends was then ranked in a five-tier system, and one blend, cafetorium, emerged as the prototype of the category.
