Résumé
In spite of the fundamental role that distinctive features
play in current linguistics, current research continues to
raise many basic questions concerning the relation they
have to measurable physical properties in the articulatory
and acoustic/auditory domains. This paper addresses this
question through the analysis of the phonetic bases of the
distinctive feature [spread glottis], based on acoustic,
fiberscopic, and photoelectroglottographic data from
Tashlhiyt Berber. A definition for this feature is
proposed, which associates a specific articulatory state
and gesture with an equally specific acoustic cue. For this
feature to be recovered, both the articulatory and acoustic
conditions should be met.
