SUMMARY:
This study seeks to analyze the different functions of dream in the auto of Calderón, Sueños hay que verdad son (1670), which is based on some episodes from Josef's life in Genesis. Beginning with the structuring function of dream, in Bible stories, I study the dramatic function of this motif in this auto, within the sacramental frame of a double reading: historial and allegorical. After first establishing the structure of the work based on its metrical organization, I go on to analyse the different dramatic units of the auto, and the dream process within each one of them. My purpose is to show how each unit is organized according to a sequence beginning with dream and leading through narration of the dream, interpretation of the dream, and a reward for the interpreter that together constitutes the dramatic unfolding of the play. By means of this sequence the assencional trajectory of Joseph—on the level of family and community politics—as an interpreter of his own dreams and those of others is established as well as the multiplicity of reading levels demanded by the specific function of dream. This function determines the dramatic progression of the different sequences, and also entails an overall eucharastic reinterpretation of the auto, a posteriori. After setting forward these points, I propose an interpretation of the title of the auto and of its general meaning considerably different from the traditional platonic readings.

El presente trabajo pretende analizar las diversas funciones del sueño en el auto de Calderón: Sueños hay que verdad son (1670), basado en varios episodios oníricos de la historia de José, referida en el Génesis. Partiendo de la función estructurante del sueño en los relatos bíblicos, estudio el funcionamiento dramático del motivo en el auto, en el marco sacramental de una doble lectura historial y alegórica. Empezando por destacar la estructura de la obra a partir de su organización métrica, analizo luego las diferentes unidades dramáticas del auto, y en ellas, el propio proceso onírico, intentando mostrar cómo se articulan en torno a un esquema sueño/relato del sueño/interpretación del sueño/premio del intérprete, que informa las diferentes secuencias del desarrollo dramático. Sobresalen entonces la trayectoria ascencional —tanto política como familial— del personaje de José en tanto que intérprete de sueños ajenos y propios, y la multiplicidad de niveles de lectura que implica el funcionamiento específico del sueño: no sólo vertebra la progresión dramática de las diferentes secuencias, sino que también implica una reinterpretación retrasada global del auto, a otro nivel alegórico, eucarístico éste. Sentadas estas bases, propongo una interpretación del título del auto, y por consiguiente de su sentido general, bastante alejada de las lecturas platónicas habituales.
