L'institution. Usages et portée d'un concept polymorphe dans un parcours sociologique

This dissertation traces three uses of the concept of institution and their interweaving throughout my work in sociology. The first use is an academic sociology and consists of studying different public actions (education, social, sustainable development) in light of this concept of institution. This involves analyzing the practical and symbolic diversity of forms of public intervention, the modalities of their appropriation by ordinary actors, as well as the scenarios for their evolution. The second use stems from a theoretical sociology and aims to understand the social as a process of permanent institution. This brings me to the tinkering of a conceptual network, the operability of which lies in the tensions between its terms: "magma of meanings", "subsequent event", "institutional machine", "institutional regimes". The third use, part of a reflective sociology, is to study my practice of sociology both as instituted by different social worlds and as having an instituting potential of reality. This problematization leads me to outline an alternative to the investigative approach, which I call "sociological conversation".

Ce mémoire retrace trois usages du concept d’institution et leur entremêlement au fil de mes travaux de sociologie. Le premier usage relève d’une sociologie académique et consiste à étudier différentes actions publiques (éducation, social, développement durable) à l’aune de ce concept d’institution. Il s’agit d’analyser la diversité pratique et symbolique des formes d’intervention publique, les modalités de leurs appropriations par les acteurs ordinaires, ainsi que les scénarios de leur évolution. Le second usage relève d’une sociologie théorique et vise à comprendre le social comme un processus d’institution permanent. Cela m’amène au bricolage d’un réseau conceptuel, dont l’opérabilité réside dans les tensions entre ses termes : « magma de significations », « évènement qui fait suite », « machine institutionnelle », « régimes d’institution ». Le troisième usage, s’inscrivant dans une sociologie réflexive, consiste à étudier ma pratique de la sociologie à la fois comme instituée par différents mondes sociaux et comme ayant un potentiel instituant de la réalité. Cette problématisation me conduit à esquisser une alternative à la démarche d’enquête, que je nomme « la conversation sociologique ».
