Médiatisation, réinterprétations et analyse d’un édifice-événement : L’orphelinat d’Aldo van Eyck à Amsterdam (1955-1960)

Résumé

The thesis aims to analyse the role of the image, and photography in particular, in the broadcast, and then in "scholar" reception and historiography of a work of architecture, the Amsterdam’s orphanage, built between 1955 and 1960 by the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck (1918-1999). Major reference of the architecture of the 20th century, this building is an event-making building. Highly publicized at its completion, particularly when the young members of Team 10 (including van Eyck) announce the death of CIAM in Otterlo Congress in 1959, it is then reinterpreted in the 1970s by many authors, who located it as the root of many movements or architectural concepts: Structuralism, Mat-building, New Amsterdam School. Throughout these media processes, aerial photography of the building supplant any other mode of representation and knowledge of the building. At a time when mass media emerging, the architectural work becomes an icon, in the literal sense of the term: an image. However, on this aerial photograph, the orphanage appears like a mat-building, which is characterized by an addition of identical modules. However, this interpretation does not stand up to careful study of the building, made through sketches study and concrete plans, which demonstrate the absence of any structural or constructive rationalization. Therefore, the representation of architecture, a necessity for its design and its dissemination, introduces a perversion in the reception of architecture. In this sense, the history of architecture must include three actors: the work, its distribution medium, and the viewer.
