Le gouvernement de la comtesse Mahaut en Artois (1302-1329)

Abstract : This work is a study of the county of Artois, which illustrates a specific moment in the process of construction of the princely States in the last Middle Ages. In 1302, the countess of Artois inherits an important but heterogeneous domain. She quickly has to face several territorial claims, as well as the royal intervention which, traditionally strong, makes even more pressing during the nobiliary revolt in the years 1315-1319: the comtal power has to assert itself in a field of contradictory force, between monarchic attraction and will of emancipation. The land holdings is all the more important since Mahaut "lives on his own". The government of the finances, the object of all the attentions, leads to the birth of a centralized, more and more specialized administration. Institutions are confided to servants always more numerous, whose most faithful can hope to rise in the social hierarchy thanks to the comtales generosities. The countess is besides very worried about the image she gives of herself and its power. Indeed, the exercise of the sovereignty is subjected to the judgment of the opinion which can, by the revolt or the fama, question its legitimacy. Even if Mahaut exercises on her subjects a dominination, particularly by exercising justice, she cannot steer without obtaining their support. That’s why she tries to strengthen the cohesion of the county by arousing a feeling of identity around herself and the comtale dynasty.
