L’émergence de l’islam dans l’espace public italien: les leaders musulmans entre intégration et intégrisme

Abstract : Until the 1990s, the religious features of Italian Muslims were generally confined to the private sphere, as a result of the feeling shared by the overwhelming majority of migrants that their presence in the country was merely temporary, and that they will soon be returning to their home country or moving on to northern Europe. Only in the wake of the reconfiguration of the family structure, it became clearer to migrants (but also to native Italians) that they were there to stay, and that their presence was bound to inflict changes on the Italian society as well as the Muslims themselves. This is principally why, as of the 90s, some Muslims living in Italy started to assert their religion publicly, either by making official claims to public institutions and more generally to the Italian society as a whole, or by the simple fact that they constituted the root of reflection, debate and confrontation, or rather by flagging their exclusion from power, which is defined as the “making of memory and the prerogative of naming”, the “definition of space and time” and the “control over and management of economic, administrative and symbolic resources”. This work aims at describing and analysing this process and, by implication, the changes that Italian Islam has undergone over the past decade, as well as the conflicts that the public affirmation of Islam has inevitably triggered.
