, Cette « mise en forme du passé » (Berger & Luckmann 1986) conduit à la création d'un « nouvel espace de croyances » (Landrin 2009) qui, néanmoins, ne saurait faire table rase du passé. Il s'agit plutôt d'en donner une interprétation renouvelée et d'en faire un levier de pouvoir et de légitimation. Autrement dit, il s'agit ici aussi de « rationnaliser l'autonomie politique de l'État » (Landrin 2009 : 46) en s'inscrivant en faux d'un passé dont on doit garantir, paradoxalement, l'héritage. Cette relecture du passée ancrée dans les événements présents dont elle dépend est observable aujourd'hui encore. La guerre de 1998-2000, les échéances électorales, le festival du Millénium ou encore la crise interne au FPLT ont montré de quelles façons la réactivation des répertoires mythologiques s'opère précisément dans des moments de crise, de rupture ou de mutations politiques et sociales (Girardet, ses symboles et ses « événements pivots » servant à légitimer une présence, voire une domination sur un territoire, 1986.
, on assiste davantage à une hybridation à l'intérieur de laquelle s'articulent quatre niveaux identitaires différents (Nations, Nationalités, Peuples, et éthiopianité « pan-éthiopienne » héritée du projet impérial) qui s'articulent et s'alimentent les uns les autres bien plus qu'ils ne s'excluent. Meles Zenawi et son entourage savent que le dénigrement d'un de ces niveaux n'est ni nécessaire, ni envisageable. 436 L'hybridation ainsi réalisée entre le « projet impérial » et les « Nations, Nationalités et Peuples » est donc à comprendre (et s'explique) à partir d'une idée de continuité, celle de la construction/formation de l'État éthiopien, elle-même rythmée par les conflits. Tout en se démarquant du passé, l'éthiopianité ainsi redéfinie s'en alimente et entend pour la première fois se tourner vers l'avenir, le nouveau millénaire, la Renaissance. L'éthiopianité ainsi redéfinie par le secteur central se fonde donc sur la coexistence de deux « systèmes de valeurs » (Shils 1975) ou, autrement dit, sur un nouveau « pluralisme normatif » (Bellina & Darbon & Eriksen & Sending 2010) né de la conjonction entre, d'une part une identité définie en alternative à l'État pendant la lutte armée (FPLT) et, À l'issue de la guerre de 1998-2000 et jusqu'à aujourd'hui, les dirigeants du FPLT-FDRPE demeurent cependant fidèles à leur projet national. Plutôt qu'à un abandon radical du fédéralisme « ethnique » au profit du retour à un « projet impérial

, Érythrée en 1993). L'expérience impériale est également à l'origine d'une perception de l'espace politique éthiopien en termes de « centre » et de « périphérie ». Perception qui demeure dominante au sein des études éthiopiennes, notamment dans l'étude de conflits perçus comme opposant le « centre » (assimilé à l'« État moderne ») à ses « périphéries » conquises durant la période impériale (assimilées aux « sociétés traditionnelles »). La réflexion est donc construite à partir de l'articulation des trois grands thèmes suivants : la formation de l'empire et de l'État éthiopien, les conflits armés, et le thème centre-périphérie. Le thème centrepériphérie se situe en effet au coeur des interprétations de la formation des empires et des États. Le rapport entre ce deux thèmes (formation de l'État et thème « centrepériphérie ») est ici reformulé à partir des notions de « secteur politique central » et de « secteur politique périphérique » (Coulon 1972). L'État est alors défini comme un processus historique produit par la formation (formelle, symbolique et cognitive) de ces deux secteurs politiques central et périphérique. , Afar) et de leur rapport à l'État éthiopien font alors apparaître non plus une, mais trois grandes tendances de conflit (toujours interdépendantes et parfois cumulatives), à savoir : le conflit entre les deux secteurs politiques, le conflit à l'intérieur du secteur politique central, et le conflit à l'intérieur du secteur politique périphérique. Enfin, ce travail défend l'idée selon laquelle ces conflits émanent d'une double crise de l'État éthiopien : une crise « de » l'État (remise en cause de l'État éthiopien lui-même), et une crise « dans » l'État (remise en cause du régime et du gouvernement éthiopien, mais pas de l'État en lui-même).
