En France des historiens évaluent de manière très diverse l'enthousiasme du peuple pour la guerre, Certains éléments de l'histoire de cette guerre donnent lieu à des débats politisés

, La commémoration de cet événement a fait surgir aussi des enjeux politiques : en Angleterre lors de la campagne annuelle de commémoration (Poppy Day), les plus grands organisateurs de la campagne soulignent leur intention de soutenir les troupes britanniques partout où elles se trouvent
