MAANA TIMILIFU KUTOKANA NA UNDIMI KATIKA UTENZI WA SIRI LI ASRARI

Abstract : The Swahili epic poem of the Secret of Secrets composed in the 17th century by Mwanamwarabu binti Bwanalemba has not been given attention it deserves academically. It is a poem adapted, creatively, from the story of one of the battles Prophet Muhammad fought with the non believers of Islam. The central theme presented is total dependence on Allah in everything the believer does by praying in His attributes when in need. Mikhail Bakhtin is of the view that in poetry no heteroglossia (the situation of many languages within a language) exists. His argues that the language of poetry is monologic, closed, non modified, and does not allow the many languages present in a language to interact. Poetic language resembles religious language, it is dictatorial, personal and cannot be criticized. This thesis attempts to reverse this proposition by stipulating that poetic and religious languages do assist in furnishing meaning to an utterance. We used three objectives to realize our goal namely: to describe this poem in the context of Sufi order; to show the interrelationship of different languages found in the poem; and to discuss how religious language is one of the languages in heteroglossia and assists in providing the actual meaning. Data was collected by extracting lexical forms, the stylization of the words utilized, narration, and the intermingling of the types of languages found in the poem. We did a content analysis of the poem and a descriptive presentation of the data was made. Our analysis realized different types of languages: academic, semi literary, individual, literary, ordinary people’s language as postulated by Bakhtin. We conclude that poetry does have different types of languages and that religious language plays an important role in presenting meaning. This work will benefit not only readers of Swahili poetry and literature but has also strengthened the Dialogic theory by giving attention to poetry and religious language as integral languages in literary works.
