Négoce et négociants en vins dans l'Hérault : pratiques, influences, trajectoires (1900-1970)

Abstract : Amidst the complex and diverse wine-producing world of Languedoc, wine wholesalers provide a subject of study particularly convenient to the multiscalar analysis on the long term. While the effects of the phylloxeric crisis are fading away, the market is upset by the fast and numerous transformations which it has just undergone. Essential middle-man be-tween the production and the consumption, the wholesaler experiences as well numerous developments in its practices and in its positioning within retailing networks, shining mainly on the whole national territory. Submitted to outside agents who force him to the dependence from the years 1920-1930, he loses little by little a part of his sales functions, to become a simple cog of distribution in the years 1950-1960. He has then no more the resources nor the capacities to direct the market as he did in the first third of the XXth century. This loss of influence is marked all the more so as, until 1940s, the wholesalers are a Southern social and professional elite well identified thanks to their implication in an effective corporatist movement, in the southern society and in numerous bodies and institutions from where they assure the running of the regional and departmental wine-making economy. But the too strong internal and outside competitions, the abuses which ruin the reputation of the traders and the Southern products on the wine market, as well as the failures of the merchants to export their products or to modify some of their practices are harmful to a profession which fades little by little from the wine and social landscapes of Hérault. Major character of the Southern and national wine economy and market, the wine wholesaler from Hérault follows the trajectory of the wine sector and, at the rate of the events, undergoes evolutions which underline his decline.
