L'astronomie nautique au XVIIIe siècle en France : tables de la Lune et longitudes en mer

Abstract : This thesis is a huge and new survey ont the quest of longitudes at sea, from new archives in 18th-Century France. It deals with prizes and awards, and expertise within the french Académie royale des sciences (part I); astronomical and nautical ephemeris, with a new history of the CONNAISSANCE DES TEMPS in particular (part II); with the choice of the best method for seafarers and in particular, lunar distances method (part III); and with theoretical works and post-newtonian improvements on the theory of the Moon's motion led by Alexis CLAIRAUT (part IV).
