Recherches sur la prophétie chez Philon d'Alexandrie

Abstract : The present dissertation addresses several aspects of prophecy in the works of Philo of Alexandria : prophetic vocabulary, the prophetical character of Abraham, the relationship between Moses’ prophecy and the three other functions he is attributed in the Life of Moses — royalty, law-giving, and priesthood —, the question of divine inspiration and the classification of Moses’ oracles, the relationship between prophecy and interpretation as illustrated by the relationship between Moses and Aaron, prophetic dreams and their classification in Philo’s writings, Philo’s critique of divination through the example of the soothsayer Balaam, the role of the former and latter prophets in Philo’s works. As opposed to most previous studies, the present dissertation takes a fresh look at the topic by focusing on the prophetical characters rather than on the theoretical aspects of prophecy.
