Les Motivations du paysage. Le vide et le plein. Perception paysagère et compétition ethnique dans l'ouest Cameroun

Abstract : Making a study about landscape in an area situated out of landscape civilization, about societies who don't have a word for landscape, arises epistemological and methodological problems to geography. You will have to approach it indirectly : from perception and through speech about what is visible. Individual perceptions, sometimes spontaneous, sometimes prompted by the researcher, are analysed through personal experience, representation, ideals and values which are mobilized in this process. In that way, we can explore the determinations of perceptive process through the context and the circumstances of its expression. We have also looked at the motives which are appealing individuals to take into account what is visible. These motives show the deliberated and intentional character of this process. About fifty interviews revealed an interpretation of what is visible shared by everyone. A stereotyped conception of the group sustains this interpretation as well as a paysagement. A photographic exercice, realized with five interviewees, reveal another component of the relations of this population to the world : invisible forces (divinity, ancestors..., of which the people have to take account in order to ensure their reproduction. Thus, what is visible can appear differently according to the circumstance of its perception, and to the interests it can support. This study inquires about how what is visible interferes in the relationships between individuals and groups, as well as about the relations between ideal and material worlds in landscape production.
