Paysages du grand domaine et normes agronomiques de Caton à Pline l'Ancien. Représentations de l'espace et "bonne mesure".

Abstract : Written mainly between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD, agricultural texts in Latin, from Cato to Pliny the Elder, can be used assess and understand the natural and social constraints that defined, in constantly changing ways, an organisational and management model for rural estates. Forms of reasoning and characteristics of composition and descriptions were all part of an effort to codify agricultural science and its purposes. While implying an idealised representation of landscapes in the fundus, Roman agricultural standards were laid down with increasing flexibility in order to integrate the plurality and diversity of the landscapes under Roman control during Rome's period of expansion. An analysis of the frequency of landscape-related subjects shows the main criteria of environmental appreciation that drew the attention of agronomy experts to achieve the reasoned, profitable layout and use of rural areas. These agricultural standards were also supported in ideological considerations. Illustrated by the use of symbols and images, the values being promoted, which often originated in the aristocratic ornamentum, provided a reason for the principles of order and measure that formed the essential basis of the spatial and human organisation of rural fundi.
